Is your email being spoofed? Phishing or IP reputation may be to blame.
What is email spoofing? Email spoofing is a technique used by scammers to attack and access your email. This includes phishing attacks when scammers copy your email headers or imitate them in order to access clients and or your data. This is dangerous for a number of reasons. Customers can lose trust in your brand if they are constantly receiving fraudulent emails from what seems to be your company. Another reason this is dangerous is that many phishing attempts include links to malicious websites, leading the reader to click on a potentially harmful email that could lead to data or financial losses.
If you believe you are the victim of email spoofing, it is nothing to be ashamed of. Email spoofing can happen to anyone and any business. In fact, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) was the victim of email spoofing in 2019. In a post on the CISA website, the organization states that “The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is aware of an email phishing scam that tricks users into clicking on malicious attachments that look like legitimate Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notifications. The email campaign uses a spoofed email address to appear like a National Cyber Awareness System (NCAS) alert and lure targeted recipients into downloading malware through a malicious attachment.” The CISA urges the recipients of these emails to not click unknown links or download unknown items. The CISA also urges users to” Be wary of unsolicited emails, even if the sender appears to be known; attempt to verify web addresses independently (e.g., contact your organization's helpdesk or search the internet for the main website of the organization or topic mentioned in the email).” The CISA also encourages individuals who receive a suspicious email to Immediately report the email(s) to your email provider or IT department.
Many may think that their email is being spoofed when their emails are not being sent to the intended recipient. This could be because of your reputation score and not email spoofing.
What is a reputation score? According to Wired Magazine, "Reputation scoring is a big part of how email providers keep your inbox from completely overflowing with spam. It also helps them protect you from phishing scams and malware. But these little-known barriers also make it much harder for just anyone to send group emails, even in small amounts." Your IP reputation score may be harming who gets to see your emails. Your emails could be at risk of going directly to thousands of spam folders.
