Is Your IP Is Your IP Reputation Score Harming Your Business?

 Score Harming Your Business?

October 29, 2020

According to Wired Magazine, "What many people don't realize is that today's spam filters don't just scan an email for questionable keywords, like references to pharmaceutical products or porn. Nor do they look merely at the email address of the sender. Crucially, they also look at the servers sending the email. Most of today's biggest email services, such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook.com, use reputation scoring to rank the likely spamminess of a server that's sending an email." When an email is sent, the IP address's reputation could be harmed. Spam or viruses associated with your IP address leads to a negative IP reputation (also known as a sender score). Think of the IP address reputation as a level of trust. Negative IP address reputations are less trustworthy and could lead to harm to your system, network, or domain.

According to Wired Magazine, "Reputation scoring is a big part of how email providers keep your inbox from completely overflowing with spam. It also helps them protect you from phishing scams and malware. But these little-known barriers also make it much harder for just anyone to send group emails, even in small amounts." Your IP reputation score may be harming who gets to see your emails. Your emails could be at risk of going directly to thousands of spam folders.

Even the CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Association) refers to IP Reputation scores to determine trustworthiness. In a Workshop held June 9, 2015, Allison Bender, a member of the CISA, stated that "… you know, kind of thinking about how do we fix the echo chamber thing, one thing that DHS has been looking at very closely is using reputation scores to be able to identify like how good do we think this piece of information is. There's always going to be a balance between anonymizing your source and protecting trust community rules, and then for the entity that's receiving that indicator, do I trust this?" Bender continues to say that "I don't know who sent it, how did they do this analysis, and, you know, reputation scores are one way that we've identified that might potentially help alleviate that concern." The everyday use of IP reputation score checking is something you and your business should pay careful attention to.

----Did you know that common shared hosting sites (Such as Joomla or Drupal) using virtual hosts may potentially have your website on the same host as other sites with poor reputation? This can contribute to a poor reputation score without you even knowing.
